2 Recipes for Baking a Potato on Your Gas Grill

With more and more people cooking outdoors – we often get asked “how do you bake a potato on a gas grill?”  And with good reason…a potato is arguably the perfect complement to grilled steak or chicken and remains one of the most popular side dishes found on plates everywhere.

Cooking Potatoes On A Gas Grill – The Next Great Thing!

If you associate baking a potato with an oven, then think again. Baking potatoes on the grill alongside your meat creates an easy meal option that lets you stay outside and avoid heating up the kitchen.

Here are two simple recipes for baking potatoes on a gas grill:

Option 1: Grilling The Whole Potato (Traditional)

We recommend that you start baking the potato BEFORE starting to cook the rest of your food as this method will take approximately 45 minutes.  You can also microwave them ahead of time which may help reduce the cooking time – but make sure so poke holes in the potatoes with a fork first!grilled potatoes

  1. Thoroughly wash the potatoes and spread a thin layer of cooking oil over aluminum foil.  It is a good idea to add cooking oil which will help keep the potato moist during cooking – 1 tbsp. is recommended for the “average” sized baked potato.
  2. For those who prefer a little “kick” on their food, consider mixing in some spices or herbs to the oil. Garlic, pepper or a little cayenne pepper can all add extra flavor and can be added as you spread the oil evenly across the foil.
  3. Using aluminum foil, wrap each potato individually.
  4. Put the grill on low heat.
  5. Place the potatoes on the grill but avoid the hottest parts of your grill if you can.  The top rack is the most convenient place, reserving the main shelf for your meat.
  6. Cook the potatoes with the lid closed for approximately 45 minutes, turning occasionally. Potatoes are done when a fork is easily inserted into the center, or they feel slightly soft when squeezed. Do not overcook.

Option 2: Crispy Potato Halves

If you’re interested in a prettier presentation, faster cook time, and crispy skins, try these simple steps:

  1. Slice the potatoes in two, lengthwise.
  2. Score the tops of the potatoes to create a grid pattern that makes a nice presentation and speeds grill cooking time.
  3. Brush the tops of the potatoes with cooking oil. Sprinkle seasonings (herbs, spices, salt, pepper, etc.) to taste.  Place skinside down on the top shelf of the grill.
  4. Cook for about 30 minutes.

Potatoes on a Gas Grill – Add Fun to Your Cooking

Follow these easy steps to bake a traditional foil wrapped potato, or a crispy open-faced potato and create a tasty side dish that will complement your steak, chicken, or other meat.  Throw your vegetables on the grill, too, and you’ll have a perfect meal all cooked in one place with easy clean-up.

Baking potatoes on your gas grill is so easy that anyone can do it.  In fact, gas grills are ideal for cooking potatoes because the heat is so even.
